EF 100mm f/2.8L Macro IS USM is world's first lens that incorporates the new Canon Hybrid Image Stabilizer, also Canon's first macro lens with Image Stabilizer. In macro photography, both shift-based and angle-based camera shake severely affect image sharpness and ruin the composition. The Hybrid IS is not only equipped with angular velocity sensor to detect the extent of angle-based shaking, but also a new acceleration sensor to detect the amount of shift-based camera shake and determines the best compensation, therefore allow user to capture clear and sharp images without the aid of a tripod, which implies enhanced flexibility of macro shooting.

Hybrid IS employs a newly developed algorithm that synthesizes information from the two sensors, thereby dramatically enhancing the effects of image stabilization. For normal shooting, compensation of up to 4-stop shutter speed can be achieved. It is also the only lens in the market that provides 2-stop image stabilization for macro shooting at 1.0x magnification.
