The EF 85mm f/1.4L IS USM is the first Canon lens with a ultra-fast aperture of f/1.4 to be equipped with an Image Stabilizer which is made possible by a strategically placed and newly developed powerful optical image stabilization unit that keeps the lens body compact and lightweight while offering shake compensation up to 4-stop¹ shutter speed. With also the ability to detect normal shooting or panning automatically for optimized compensation, the incorporation of the IS unit makes this lens perfect for handheld wedding photography and videography, enabling photographers to capture important life moments with greater shooting flexibility and stability.

In general, to equip a ultra-fast aperture lens with an IS system, the arrangement and weight of the focus and image stabilization groups would inevitably sacrifice the size and weight of the lens. Canon succeeded in equipping the EF 85mm f/1.4L IS USM with a new and powerful Image Stabilizer that has a comparable size to that used in the EF 400mm f/2.8L IS II USM super telephoto lens by combining advanced technologies, such as rearranging optics, using new glass materials and layering 0.1mm scale compact mechanical components. This makes it possible to keep the lens body compact and lightweight while bringing unprecedented advantages through the combination of f/1.4 ultra-fast aperture and Image Stabilizer.

The EF 85mm f/1.4L IS USM features a newly developed 14 elements in 10 groups optical design to deliver high image quality from the center to the periphery, by using 1 Glass-molded (GMo) aspherical lens which corrects both spherical aberration and curvature of field, as well as lenses made of new glass material with high refractive index and anomalous dispersion properties to correct axial chromatic aberration and chromatic aberration of magnification. Furthermore, Air Sphere Coating (ASC) is incorporated to offer excellent anti-reflection performance to reduce ghosting and flare. The resulting high levels of sharpness and detail befitting an L lens can meet today’s needs of high-resolution shooting.

As a professional portrait lens, the EF 85mm f/1.4L IS USM reproduces the flattering skin tones highly praised by Canon users while the medium telephoto focal length of 85mm brings beautiful perspective and compression for stunning portraits. The lens’ f/1.4 fast aperture, coupled with a 9 circular aperture blades design, produces beautiful bokeh and complements the foreground subject in pin-sharp clarity perfectly for more striking shots. The fast aperture is also capable of transmitting more light to boost exposure and depth-of-field control, as well as bringing greater shooting flexibility in low-light environment. In addition, the lens supports 0.85m minimum focusing distance with 0.12x maximum magnification, enabling photographers to capture feature shots to a certain extent.
