Together with the Accelerated Capture System, the EOS R5 Mark II achieves groundbreaking improvements in areas such as AF recognition & speed, noise reduction, in-camera upscaling and accuracy in auto exposure and white balance.

45.0MP Back-illuminated Stacked Full Frame CMOS Sensor

The EOS R5 Mark II features Canon's newly developed Full Frame Back-illuminated Stacked CMOS Sensor with a high resolution of 45.0 megapixels and a standard ISO range of ISO 100 to 51,200, which can be extended to ISO 102,400, for clean and low-noise images in low-light environments.
The back-illuminated stacked sensor places the wiring behind the photodiode. Its stacked structure separates the data processing area from the pixel area and optimizes them for faster readout speeds.
The electronic shutter of EOS R5 Mark II now supports shutter speed of 1/32000s to 30s and bulb exposure. The high speed readout of CMOS sensor also enables 14-bit RAW with electronic shutter for higher image quality.

    DIGIC Accelerator

The newly developed DIGIC Accelerator image processor can readout large volumes of data from the sensor and instantly perform analysis and processing including AE / AF detection that requires high-level analysis. The high speed processing of DIGIC Accelerator enables features not possible before, such as high-speed shooting, AF capable of fast analysis and determinations, and simultaneous still photo / movie shooting. The existing DIGIC X image processor is now mainly focus in image processing related tasks.

    30 FPS High Speed Shooting

Taking the advantage of back-illuminated stacked CMOS and Accelerated Capture system, EOS R5 Mark II supports high speed continuous shooting up to approx. 30FPS2 with AF / AE using Electronic Shutter1. Blackout-Free display7 is also available during continuous shooting.
Electronic shutter is useful for shooting wildlife and in theaters, concert halls, golf tournaments, and other situations where shutter noise is unwanted8.

    Electronic shutter Continuous shooting speed

High-speed continuous (H) and Low-speed continuous (L) drive modes not found in EOS R5’s electronic shutter mode are now provided.

User can now customize the Electronic shutter Continuous shooting speed in each drive mode for flexibility.

Switch Electronic shutter cont. shooting modes

The new [Switch Electronic shutter cont. shooting modes] function allows user to switch the drive mode with press of a button which the function assigned.

For example, user can set to High-speed continuous shooting (H) of 15FPS for normal shooting, and switch to a High-speed continuous shooting (H+) of 30FPS by holding down the assigned button while shooting.

    Reduced rolling shutter distortion

The new CMOS sensor and high-speed signal readout of the image processor system make faster read-out for the electronic shutter compared to the EOS R5, thus reducing rolling shutter distortion. Rolling shutter distortion in still photo reduced to about 40% of EOS R5.

    Pre-continuous shooting

The Pre-continuous shooting function9 lets users capture continuous still photos from the previous 15 frames immediately before fully-pressing the shutter button. Users can choose from RAW / C-RAW / JPEG / HEIF recording and supports AF / AE tracking. It can also be used with Action Priority and Register People Priority, providing pace of mind with less risk of failed shots when shooting difficult subjects that photographers in the past had to use their intuition to capture.

Supports flash photography with electronic shutter

The use of a high-speed sensor makes it possible for EOS R5 Mark II to control flash metering during continuous shooting in all shutter modes (mechanical, electronic 1st-curtain, and electronic shutter).
With the electronic shutter, the flash sync. speed is up to 1/160s and up to 1/200s10 with Sync speed priority.
Flash metering between shots is also possible, enabling continuous flash photography at up to approx. 8.6 shots/sec.11 or 20 shots/sec.11 when metering is set on the first shot, expanding the range of flash capabilities.

In-Body Image Stabilizer with 8.5-stop shake compensation

EOS R5 Mark II features improved 5-axis In-Body Image Stabilization which provides up to 8.5-stop shake compensation at center12 and 7.5-stop shake compensation at peripheral12. Peripherical coordinated control is also supported with compatible lens.
The more precise blur correction calculation by the DIGIC accelerator and improved algorithm provide better control of Yaw / Pitch / Roll direction blurring over the EOS R3. The small shakes that can occur even when the shutter speed is fast (near the 1 / focal length) have also been suppressed. Newly designed IS mechanism also doubles the range of blur control in the rolling direction over the EOS R3.

More precise metering with 6144 Zones

New function for AE calculation processing is added to the DIGIC Accelerator, enabling metering calculation in high-speed. This allows more precise metering control with the metering zones subdivided into 6,144 zones (384 zones for flash metering), 16 times the number of previous models (384 zones). It can detect skin areas even if the subject's face is small or does not appear large in the photo, allowing for highly accurate light metering and white balance control.

The EOS R5 Mark II also uses subject information obtained from subdivided metering zones and a new algorithm that expands the range of deep learning applications to improve auto white balance precision in all kinds of scenes.

Imaging Functions using Deep Learning Technology

    In-Camera Upscaling

In-camera upscaling 13 uses deep learning to increase the number of pixels of JPEG / HELF by 2x vertically and horizontally, for 4x from 45MP to approx. 179MP after shooting. The algorithm is fine-tuned so that it creates images that do not deviate from the original image while maintaining apparent resolution.
In-camera upscaling can also be performed when cropping captured images. Processing time is faster than generating a high-resolution image of approx. 179MP and then cropping it, and high-resolution cropped images of only the necessary images can be generated.

    Neural network Noise Reduction

EOS R5 Mark II supports Neural network Noise Reduction, which applies deep learning to generate images with reduced noise when processing RAW images in-camera. No cloud service or computer software is required, and captured images can be enhanced in-camera. High-quality images with low noise and preserved resolution can be quickly obtained without a computer. Users can expand their range of photography in other ways taking advantage of the EOS R5 Mark II’s high sensitivity performance, including shooting in darker conditions, brightening images during development, and shooting at faster shutter speeds.

    Dual Pixel Intelligent AF
    &
    Eye Control AF

    Dual Pixel Intelligent AF

The advanced Dual Pixel Intelligent AF based on Accelerated Capture and deep learning instantly analyzes large amounts of data from the sensor to obtain various types of AF information.
The Accelerated Capture system uses a variety of subject information obtained from images, it captures the characteristics and movements of the individual subject, as well as information other than the subject. By repeating calculations within and between frames, it can be used for high-precision AF that follows movements that conventional tracking cannot follow. When tracking is used, the camera can persistently track a player with high precision even if the subject is temporarily hidden, or it can provide moments that were not possible before, such as following a subject in a specific posture with Action Priority.

Faster computations for AF and Tracking

AF and tracking at up to approx. 60fps is possible when using electronic shutter with EOS R5 Mark II. Even fast-moving subjects can be tracked with precise focus, letting users be assured they can get shots with high AF accuracy with lens drive at up to approx. 60fps. In addition, the AF frame is displayed at a up to approx. 120fps during AF (up to approx. 60fps during recording), making it easier to check the tracking status.

AF Tracking with Crossing Subjects Support

The new image processor system of EOS R5 Mark II uses high-speed data processing and deep learning for better AF tracking accuracy than previous models. The new algorithm used face recognition, new upper half body detection and estimating head area to avoid focusing obstacles in front of the subject. When tracking a person, it recognizes the face of the first subject to be tracked even if Registered People Priority is turned off, so even if the subject is temporarily hidden, it can keep tracking to the same person when it reappears. The tracking is even easier to use, including the tracking with crossing subject. Improvements in AF tracking also apply to animal or vehicle subjects, where the camera can accurately track subjects of different shapes and colors (e.g., motorcycles of different colors or dogs of different breeds).

    Action Priority AF

EOS R5 Mark II ‘s Action Priority3 identifies actions unique to sports events and moves the AF point to that subject. The new image processor system's high-speed data processing and new processing algorithm that uses machine learning and deep learning enable high-speed detection and identification of multiple people, status of joints, and ball positions at speeds of up to approx. 60 fps (maximum speed during continuous shooting: approx. 45 fps).

It is now possible to shoot while automatically focusing on a person performing a certain action in instantaneous or crucial scenes where it was difficult to move the AF frame with the previous arbitrary 1-point AF or people detection AF, such as the scene of a shot from a high-speed pass in Soccer (Football), or in fast-moving and decisive scenes with multiple subjects.

    Sports Event Action for identification
    Soccer Shooting / Heading / Short Pass / Long Pass / Dribbling / Clearing / Place Kick / Goalkeeper Save / Throw-in / Sliding
Basketball Shooting / Rebounding / Passing / Dribbling / Free Throws / Jump Balls
Volleyball Spike / Toss / Receive / Serve

    Register People Priority

By registering up to 10 people in the camera in advance, it becomes possible to detect a specific person preferentially even when there are multiple people in the AF area / point14. Use of the new algorithm that employs deep learning can improve tracking performance when faces are turned diagonally (as long as both eyes, nose, and mouth are visible) even more than with the EOS R3. Furthermore, detection performance is improved also in harsh shooting environments such as a location with backlighting. This enables tracking in sports and other situations in which faces change direction frequently, adding new possibilities for use.

    Eye Control AF

EOS R5 Mark II marks the return of Eye Control AF4 to EOS 5 series camera, the innovative The eye control feature operates AF based on where users are looking in the viewfinder.  It can quickly move the AF point according to the line of sight for subjects users wish to focus on during photo shooting.
The eye control sensor has a higher pixel count and improved placement with a greater number of light source LEDs. Eye detection area is now larger, improving detection stability when eye alignment is off or glasses are worn.
Detection algorithm improvements have doubled the line-of-sight detection frame rate. This enables more stable detection and faster tracking of eye movement.

    Advanced Subject Recognition and Tracking

EOS R5 Mark II also features AF algorithm developed using Deep Learning technology for high performance Subject Recognition and AF tracking of people, animals14 and vehicles16.

    Subject to detect

    Features

    Auto

Auto Subject Detection detects and selects people, animals or vehicles as subject automatically. User can take photos of people, animals, and vehicles without considering the camera settings.

    People

Apart from eye / face / head / body detection, new upper body detection has been added.  Recognition is enabled even when the subject appears smaller or more distant. Upper body information can also be used to enable stable tracking even when subjects cross or in other complex scenes. Right Eye priority or Left Eye priority also available with Eye Detection AF.

    Animals

In addition to dogs, cats and birds, animal detection now supports detection of horses (racing horses, zebra and ponies, etc) even with rider. Right Eye priority or Left Eye priority also available with Eye Detection AF.

    Vehicles

Vehicles Detection is enhanced to cover train (high speed trains, conventional trains and steam locomotives) and airplane (jet planes and helicopters) in addition to motorsports (automobiles and motorcycles). With Spot detection setting, the driver cab of high-speed train or cockpit of airplane can be detected.

    Whole Area Tracking Servo AF

EOS R5 Mark II’s  Whole Area Tracking Servo AF is possible from any one of the 8 AF Area modes, including 1-point AF or Flexible Zone AF, for flexible AF operability.  If AF is started when the subject is close, the camera appropriately detects the subject and focus position as if it were “grabbing” onto the subject.
Tracking subject can be switched during AF or continuous shooting. Whole Area Tracking Servo AF can be turned on or off during AF or continuous shooting.
For users who prefer stay focused on the set AF area without tracking, 4 AF areas with Whole Area Tracking AF OFF have been added to EOS R5 Mark II.

    Focus Preset

Focus preset function has up until now been only available on fast super-telephoto lenses, but it can now be assigned to any of the camera buttons or the lens function button (L.Fn) and used with all RF lenses that support AF .

    Blur / Out-of-Focus image detection

Improvements in continuous shooting performance with the electronic shutter give users more opportunities to take many pictures with a single press of the shutter. But having to select the best shots after shooting is a lot of work for photographers. The EOS R5 Mark II features a Blur / Out-of-Focus image detection17 function that automatically scores JPEG / HELF images for levels of blur and out-of-focus based on face positions of the people subject and adds results to images. The Blur / Out-of-Focus image detection level can be set at three choices: [Low / Standard / High]. This makes it possible to quickly select images even in situations with precise focus needs that are difficult to determine on an LCD monitor. Blur / Out-of-Focus image detection results can also be added to the Exif information and checked after shooting.

    Environmental Protection

Canon is working to reduce the amount of plastic materials used in product packaging.

In EOS R5 Mark II, the product and other items are wrapped in bags that use plant-derived non-woven fabrics and paper materials. This reduces the amount of plastic used in packaging, thereby reducing our impact on the environment.

1 Depending on the nature of subject or shooting conditions, rolling shutter image distortion may occur.
2 Continuous shooting speed may be slower depending on subject/shooting conditions or the camera setup or the lens used, etc. Refer to Advanced User Guide for details. Continuous shooting speed is slower when flicker is detected, even if anti-flicker shooting is off. For information on lenses that support the maximum continuous shooting speed, please refer to Canon Website.
3 Only available will still photos and electronic shutter. If the person's size on the screen is small, or if part of the subject is hidden or multiple subjects are crowded together, identification accuracy may decrease.
4 Calibration is recommended in advance. Note that the Eye Control AF may not function properly if the user wears sunglasses, mirror-type sunglasses, hard contact lenses, or bifocal eyeglasses, or due to the user’s eye conditions (narrow eyes, long eyelashes, thick eyelids) or use conditions. If the eyes are squinting or too close together, the camera may not detect the user’s eye gaze, or the detection accuracy may decrease. It is necessary to press a button to lock the focus.
    5 When using 4K DCI/UHD Fine 29.97p/25.00p. ISO 800.
    6 2 memory cards must be installed. 16:9 JPEG recorded at 7680 x 4320 pixel (33.2MP).
7 Available with electronic shutter only. The screen may flicker depending on the aperture settings. When set to always blackout-free, release time lag may vary.
8 Sounds other than the shutter (aperture, focus lens drive sound, and electronic sound, etc.) may be generated.
9 Electronic shutter only. Not available when the shutter speed is slower than 0.5 sec. Other restrictions apply.
10 When using the EL series Speedlite or 600EX II-RT/470EX-AI/430EX III-RT/MT-26EX-RT/MR-14 EX II with [Sync speed priority: On] is set. Sync speed is 1/160s when [Sync speed priority: Off] is set.
11 With using an external EL/EX flash unit release in or after 2007.
12  Based on the CIPA 2024 standard. Yaw/pitch/roll image stabilization performance with RF24-105mm F2.8L IS USM (focal length: 105mm).
13 Upscaling is only available for images captured as JPEGs or HEIFs with an image size of L. Still photos captured during movie recording cannot be upscaled in-camera. Some time may be required for image processing.
14 Due to factors such as face brightness, size, facial expression, movement, and blockage of part of the face, the detection accuracy may decrease.
15  Effectiveness varies depending on the subject. In some cases, dogs, cats, horses or birds may not be detected, while some animals other than dogs, cats, horses or birds may be detected.
16 The vehicle detection may not function for some subjects. Or, subjects, which are not automobile, motorcycle, train, airplane or helicopter, may be detected as vehicles. Spot detection may not work properly depending on the subject. The camera may also operate spot-detecting areas that are neither a driver nor rider helmet, as well as neither a train driver cab nor an aircraft cockpit.
17  Blur/Out-of-Focus detection may not be performed for some scenes or subjects, or results may be inaccurate. Only JPEG or HEIF images are evaluated, and only when the camera is set to use the electronic shutter and detect people or eyes.
18 When [High Frame Rate: Disable] is set, audio is recorded and movie is played back at actual speed.
19 Auto power off temperature is set to High. Room Temperature: 23oC. According to Canon testing conditions.
