Thanks to the advantages of large-diameter, short back focus distance and greater freedom in lens design offered by the RF mount, the classic 70-200mm f/2.8 telephoto zoom lens is completely re-designed for the EOS R mirrorless camera system to become the shortest and lightest Canon 70-200mm f/2.8 lens. This unprecedented compactness is achieved by utilizing a new zoom type with a variable length design, the first use of UD aspherical lens and "Electronic Floating Focus Control" technology. When compared to EF 70-200mm f/2.8L IS III USM, it has a significant length and weight reduction to 146mm and 1,070g respectively. Professional photographers will find it more comfortable to shoot handheld with this lens and easy to carry it around.
F2.8 Large Aperture
Being one of the RF F2.8 Trinity Lenses, RF70-200mm F2.8 L IS USM provides fast f/2.8 aperture throughout the zoom range, delivering beautiful and soft background blur with its 9-blade circular aperture. With the fast f/2.8 aperture, photographers can also use lower ISO or faster shutter for their shooting in dark situations.

Versatile Focal Length
RF70-200mm F2.8 L IS USM covers from medium telephoto focal length of 70mm to telephoto focal length of 200mm, which provides a range suited for different genres from sports to portraits or snapshots as well. Superb Image Quality
The RF70-200mm F2.8 L IS USM features a newly developed 17 elements in 13 groups optical design which takes advantage of the large diameter mount and short back focus of RF Mount. By using a UD GMo aspherical lens for the first time and placing a large diameter GMo aspherical lenses near the focal plane, both high image quality across the entire screen and downsizing of the optical system are made possible. In addition, 1 Super UD lens and 3 UD lens elements corrects chromatic aberration successfully to achieve edge-to-edge high resolution throughout the entire zoom range from 70-200mm.

UD Aspherical Lens
By using UD GMo aspherical lens that correct aberrations as aspherical lenses in addition to a GMo aspherical lens, it made it possible to reduce the number of lenses while maintaining optical performance that is higher than existing lenses, thus reducing the overall weight and size of the lens.
Super UD and UD Lenses
The use of Super UD and UD lenses also successfully suppresses color aberration from bokeh in the defocus region. This achieves beautiful bokeh unique to a large aperture lens.
Subwavelength Structure Coating (SWC)
SWC is used on the GMo aspherical lens to suppress flaring and ghosting that are harmful to image quality.
Electronic Floating Focus Control
The RF70-200mm F2.8 L IS USM adopts the "Electronic Floating Focus Control" technology with an additional "floating lens group" to the "focus lens group" for autofocus, a first in Canon. With this technology, the positions of the “focus lens group” and “floating lens group” can change according to the focal length and subject distance without the need of complex zoom cam mechanism, so that out-of-focus and aberrations are always reduced during zooming while keeping the lens compact.
High Speed and Silent AF
Two Nano USMs are used in RF70-200mm F2.8 L IS USM to drive the "focus lens group" and "floating lens group" individually. They can deliver high speed and high accuracy AF for photo shooting as well as smooth and nearly silent Movie Servo AF for movie recording. Moreover, "lens breathing" effect is also reduced during video recording by utilizing the “Electronic Floating Focus Control” technology.

Minimum Focusing Distance of 0.7m
The electronic floating focus system drastically shortened the minimum focusing distance and enables excellent correction of aberrations during close-up shooting. A minimum focusing distance of 0.7m with a maximum magnification of 0.23x (at 200mm) is achieved.
Image Stabilization up to 7.5 stops1
The lens’ built-in Optical Image Stabilizer provides up to 5 stops image stabilization2 that facilitates handheld shooting. When paired with EOS R series cameras equipped with In-Body Image Stabilization, up to 7.5 stops1 image stabilization can be achieved, which allows to shoot with slow shutter in dark situations.

Lens is compatible with Electronic full-time MF3, focus can be adjusted manually with focus ring anytime during ONE SHOT AF or SERVO AF.

Control Ring
Incorporates the RF lens control ring to adjust assigned settings such as ISO speed, shutter speed or aperture value directly from the lens.
The clicking sensation and sound of the control ring can be removed for silent control during photo shooting or video recording. This service is available at Canon Care Center (chargeable service).
Better Balance
While using a zoom type that changes its overall length, a large portion of the lens elements are arranged on the camera body side to maintain a good holding balance even at the telephoto end.
Hood with sliding window for easy filter operation
A sliding window is provided on the bundled Lens Hood ET-83F (W III) for easy operation of Circular Polarizing filter or Variable ND filter, etc. with the hood attached.
Heat-Shield Coating
Features a white heat shield coating on both body and lens hood to suppress the rise of the lens temperature in hot weather to ensure stable optical performance.
Fluorine Coating
Fluorine coating on foremost and rearmost lens surfaces help prevent dust, oil and water from sticking to the lens, makes cleaning much easier.
