135mm is an ideal focal length for portraits, keeping the right distance for communication with the subject but not too far away like with telephoto lenses, the medium telephoto compression effect and shallow depth of field enable beautiful portraits with a sense of perspective.
The advantage of shooting with a medium telephoto lens is that it offers greater bokeh than with wide-angle or standard lenses, enabling beautiful and natural images with less distortion.

Even with half-length and full-length portrait shots, where there is a distance between the photographer and subject, this lens enables portraits with compressive perspective and beautifully blurred backgrounds with its 135mm focal length and f/1.8 aperture.

Ultra-Fast F1.8 Aperture

RF135mm F1.8 L IS USM’s ultra-fast f/1.8 aperture, with a 9-blade circular aperture, enables extremely soft and dreamy bokeh to make subject stands out.
The lens offers the outstanding bokeh effects of a fixed focal length lens with optimized optics because the focal length does not change, which is not possible with a 70-200mm F2.8 zoom lens.  
By making use of the Subject Detection and Eye-detection AF on EOS R series camera, photographers can focus precisely on subject or subject’s eye even at wide open aperture.

The RF135mm F1.8 L IS USM features a newly developed 17 elements in 12 groups optical design which takes advantage of the large diameter mount and short back focus of RF Mount.
The effective placement of 3 UD lenses reduces axial and magnification chromatic aberrations for outstanding image quality even at wide open f/1.8.

0.26x Max. Magnification

RF135mm F1.8 L IS USM is capable of shooting with 0.26x maximum magnification at a minimum focusing distance of 0.7m, this enables impressive portraits that get close-ups of faces or enlargements of a portion of the subject while keeping an appropriate distance. It expresses the subject with outstanding clarity and resolution, clearly rendering skin textures, eyes, hair, jewelry and more.

In addition to portrait, its close-up capability is also useful for wide range of subjects, including nature photos of plants and insects as well as snapshots.
Photographers can capture fine details of small subjects clearly while keeping an appropriate distance from vigilant subjects such as insects and small animals, all with beautifully blurred backgrounds.

Image Stabilization up to 8-stop²

RF135mm F1.8 L IS USM’s built-in Optical Image Stabilizer, which is rarely found in lenses of same class, offers 5.5-stop shake compensation¹ to facilitate handheld shooting in low light.
When paired with the EOS R-series cameras featuring In-Body Image Stabilization, the lens supports a stunning 8-stop shake compensation² with Coordinated Control IS.
Even with built-in Optical Image Stabilizer, the lens weights only 935g, which is similar to that of lenses of same class.

High Speed Nano USM

The high-speed and high-precision Nano USM provides excellent AF capability for photo shooting.
For Video shooting, the Nano USM offers quiet and smooth Movie Servo AF.  

Supports Focus Breathing Correction

When paired with EOS R-series cameras supporting Focus Breathing Correction, the changes in the angle of view caused by focus movement can be suppressed. It allows users to record natural movies with no discomfort even if focus is changed from foreground to background or vice-versa.
