RF200-800mm F6.3-9 IS USM is the World’s first super-telephoto zoom lens for mirrorless camera with a telephoto end of 800mm1, it incorporates a variable-length zoom design to realize 4x zoom and a compact and lightweight design. The lens weighs only about 2,050g and is only approx. 314.1mm in length, providing excellent mobility. Together with the 5.5-stop shake compensation2 provided by the Optical Image Stabilizer, it makes handheld super telephoto shooting more comfortable. Its 200mm to 800mm focal length range is suitable for subjects such as birds, wildlife, and outdoor sports, Extender RF1.4x and RF2x is also supported for extended flexibility. The lens incorporates a 17 elements in 11 groups optical design with 3 UD lenses to correct chromatic aberration throughout the zoom range. It also features high level of durability and shock resistance with dust-and-water-resistant design3 equivalent to that of L-series lenses.

RF200-800mm F6.3-9 IS USM also employs an optimized optical configuration and uses a variable-length zoom type that takes advantage of the RF Mount’s short back focus. The lens features a telescoping first lens group to realize 4x zoom and shorten its overall length, it is only approx. 314.1mm in length at 200mm, providing excellent mobility to the lens.
Weight reduction measures of RF200-800mm F6.3-9 IS USM:
- The weight of the first zoom lens group that consists of 3 large diameter lenses is reduced significantly by making the distance between the first and second lenses larger while reducing the diameters of the second and third lenses, contributing to significant reduction in overall weight of the lens.
- Through repeated shape changes and strength simulations, various parts are made lighter without sacrificing strength or robustness.
- Metal is used for lens exterior parts related to strength, but resin is also used to reduce weight and number of parts. Barrel diameter is also reduced by using a thin Nano USM.
- The tripod mount has also been made lighter while maintaining its strength.

“Focus mode / Control Selector” switch provides AF/Control/MF options. It not only allows easy switching the function of “Focusing/Control Ring” between Focusing Ring and Control Ring, it also makes fast switching between auto focus and manual focus possible without going into camera menu.

Adjustment Ring
Features the Adjustment Ring to adjust the operational feeling (weight of movement) of the zoom ring to a preferred level between SMOOTH and TIGHT.
Tripod Mount Ring
The tripod mount ring is placed in such a way that the weight balance does not change easily even when the total length of the lens changes due to zooming operation.
Moreover, the position of the tripod mount was determined through repeated simulations and experiments, in order to prevent blurring caused by shutter shock throughout the entire zoom range.
White Lens Exterior
As RF200-800mm F6.3-9 IS USM is primarily designed for outdoor use, white paint that suppresses temperature rise due to sunlight is employed despite its classification of Non-L lens series.
